The launching ceremony of the first Hangor-class submarine occurred at the Shuangliu base of theĀ Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group in Wuhan, China. The event, held just yesterday, was attended by dignitaries from both Pakistan and China, underscoring a significant step forward in bilateral cooperation and maritime security.
Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf graced the occasion as the chief guest, emphasizing the paramount importance of maritime security in the current geo-strategic environment. Addressing the ceremony, Admiral Ashraf underscored Pakistan Navy's commitment to contributing to a safe and conducive maritime environment for all stakeholders. He highlighted the pivotal role that Hangor-class submarines, equipped with state-of-the-art weapons and sensors, will play in maintaining peace and stability in the region.
The project itself symbolizes the enduring friendship
between Pakistan and China, as evidenced by the agreement signed during Chinese
President Xi Jinping's visit to Pakistan. Under this agreement, Pakistan is set
to acquire a total of eight Hangor-class submarines, with four to be
constructed in China and the remaining four in Pakistan at Karachi Shipyard
& Engineering Works Limited, under Transfer of Technology (ToT).
These submarines, armed with advanced weapons and sensors, are designed to engage targets at standoff ranges, enhancing Pakistan Navy's maritime capabilities significantly. Moreover, this collaboration signifies a deeper level of strategic partnership between Pakistan and China, extending beyond economic and diplomatic spheres into defense cooperation.
However, the journey towards acquiring these submarines has not been without its challenges. Delays in the project timeline, attributed to technical issues such as engine specifications, have necessitated adaptations along the way. Nevertheless, the Pakistan Navy remains steadfast in its commitment to the Hangor program, recognizing its transformative potential for the country's naval defense capabilities.
The Hangor-class submarine represents a new era for Pakistan's submarine fleet, building upon the legacy of previous acquisitions. With its Stirling AIP system enabling prolonged underwater operations and its versatile armament capabilities, including the deployment of submarine-launched cruise missiles, the Hangor-class promises to be a formidable asset for Pakistan Navy's 'silent service.'
As Pakistan progresses towards inducting these submarines into its fleet, attention turns to the broader strategic implications. With 11 AIP-equipped submarines in its arsenal, Pakistan Navy positions itself as a key player in the maritime domain of Asia, contributing to regional stability and security.
In essence, the launch of the first Hangor-class submarine signifies not only a significant advancement in naval construction but also a testament to the enduring partnership between Pakistan and China, with far-reaching implications for regional security dynamics.
