T-38 Devil Ray USV Spearheads Task Force 59's Mission

Task Force 59, a unit under the US Navy's 5th Fleet, has recently deployed the Maritime Tactical Systems (MARTAC) T-38 Devil Ray unmanned surface vessel (USV) in the Arabian Gulf. Images released by the US Department of Defense highlight the crucial role of the USV in supporting large-scale operations, aligning with the Navy's strategic initiative to integrate cutting-edge technologies into maritime operations in the Middle East region.

Established in 2021 and achieving full operational capability in January 2023, Task Force 59 specializes in the integration of unmanned systems and artificial intelligence to enhance maritime security and stability. The deployment of the T-38 Devil Ray underscores the unit's progress in integrating Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs), Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs), and Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) for comprehensive maritime operations.

Collaborations with international military partners, including Israel, Bahrain, and Jordan, have played a pivotal role in Task Force 59's evolution, with a specific focus on advancing USVs and AI technologies. The unit envisions a future marked by a "digital ocean," where data from diverse sources is intelligently synthesized for continuous maritime monitoring.

The T-38 Devil Ray USV, developed by Maritime Tactical Systems (MARTAC), boasts impressive capabilities, cruising at speeds of 25 knots with a burst speed of 80 knots. This underscores its potential in fulfill logistics functions in amphibious operations. Task Force 59's achievements have catalyzed plans for the establishment of uncrewed task forces globally, aiming to replicate its success and extend leadership opportunities for junior naval officers.
